Physical Therapy in Edmonton

Glengarry Physical Therapy of Edmonton, a provider of services to the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Workers’ Compensation, in addition to numerous insurance companies. We also provide home visits as needed to bring our services to a broad patient base.

Each of our treatments is uniquely customized to the patient; we do not use what we call “recipe treatments” geared to a one approach fits all idea.

Our services include, but are not limited to, those described in this section:

Motor Vehicle Injuries

From head injuries to whiplash to musculoskeletal issues we will work with your physician, insurance provider and other team members to assist in your recovery following a motor vehicle accident.

Our goal is to assess your injuries, discuss and then prescribe a course of physical therapy for you, and help you recover as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

Back and Neck Pain

In Canada, one of the most common reasons people seek physical therapy is to find relief from back and neck pain. Both conditions can deter us from living life to our normal level of activity and seriously impact our quality of life.

After determining the root cause of your pain, we work out a customized treatment plan to begin the healing process, combined with a series of exercises and education to help prevent recurring problems.

Urinary and Pelvic Health Pain

We treat both men’s and women’s incontinence issues and pelvic pain.

Symptoms of pelvic pain include abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, overactive bladder, urinary/fecal incontinence, chronic constipation, sexual dysfunction and pain, pre-natal and post-partum conditions for women and prostatis/post prostatectomy for men.

By using a course of manual therapy and exercise, we work to eliminate chronic pain in the pelvic area and build strength.

Manual Therapy

We use a hands-on technique known as manual therapy to mobilize and manipulate your body in an effort to decrease pain and increase your range of motion.

Manual therapy is very effective in adding flexibility to stiff joints and muscles.

This treatment, when coupled with our education component and series of prescribed exercises, will allow you to regain your strength faster by being able to work on your rehabilitation at home between visits.

Acupuncture

Specially trained to use the ancient Chinese medicine therapy of acupuncture, we help relieve many chronic pain conditions including fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome with this procedure.

Through the repeated penetration of the skin using thin metallic needles, we help to correct imbalances of energy flow at points close to the skin and relieve your pain and stiffness.

Like so many of our treatments, the delivery of acupuncture is a highly customized therapy as we work with you individually to identify the problematic areas and then gently stimulate them with the needles.

Kinesiotaping

The support and stability of kinesiotaping for muscles and joints enhances the body’s natural healing process.

Kinesiotaping is particularly effective because it does not restrict the body’s normal range of motion and its natural soft tissue manipulation enhances the benefits of physical therapy.

Our kinesiotaping product is latex free and can be worn for several days without harmful effects. It can also help to alleviate pain and encourage lymphatic drainage.

Sports Injuries

At Glengarry Physical Therapy in Edmonton, we treat high school, college and recreational athletes who have sustained sports injuries.

Our goal is to determine the cause of the injury, reduce pain and inflammation and begin the healing process, and educate the athlete to prevent recurring injuries.

Sports injuries we commonly treat include runner’s knees, golfer’s shoulder, tennis elbow and sprains, strains and fractures of all areas.

We aim to get you healed and back to enjoying the sport of your choice as quickly as possible.

Polio Survivors

We are experienced in working with patients who have problems related to the late effects of poliomyelitis.

We will evaluate and treat patients, including those with post-polio syndrome, who are suffering from pain, fatigue and weakness.

Gait Assessments

When your running or walking gait is off, not only will your ability to walk and run be compromised, but it can lead to other issues if left untreated.

We will take the time to complete a thorough and comprehensive gait assessment on you and determine the real source of the problem. By focusing first on finding the cause and then providing therapy to heal the effect, we work to get you back on your feet as quickly as possible.

Intra-muscular Stimulation

Developed by Dr. Chan Gunn in British Columbia in the 1970s, intra-muscular stimulation (IMS) is an effective treatment for patients suffering from chronic pain of neuropathic origin.

In this therapy, we use needles similar to the kind used in acupuncture to seek out and diagnosis muscle shortening in deep muscles.

It is a highly effective way to treat this kind of pain.

Pre and post joint replacement surgery

Research has shown that having physical therapy both before and after a joint replacement surgery will speed up healing and lead to a full recovery.

We are knowledgeable about joint replacement surgery and other surgeries and will work with your surgeon and physician as a team to determine the most effective therapy for you.

Our goal is to help you increase strength, activity and range of motion so that you can return to a normally active life as quickly as possible without recurring problems.

Spinal Cord Injuries

We are distinguished for our effectiveness in treating patients with spinal cord injuries and conditions.

Working with our patient’s physician and other health team members as needed, our primary goals are to prevent the progression of complication and promote recovery.

To do this we provide a comprehensive program of therapeutic strengthening therapies.

Wounds and Scars

Although scar formation is an important component of healing, it can cause pain and discomfort to the person who has been injured or required surgery.

We use manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue massage to ease the pain of wounds and scars. We also use appropriate modalities to help improve the scar formation and tensile strength throughout the recuperative stages.
